Thoughts about Merit Beauty’s First Ever Skin Care Product

In recent years, the makeup landscape has gone from an exaggerated smoky eyeshadow and a defined contour (which we love for a high-end event) to a more natural, subtle feeling that makes people wonder: are you wearing makeup at all? Makeup without makeup has become a must for celebrities and makeup artists, as they choose light formulations that highlight the skin under the product, rather than heavier options that mattify the skin. In addition, beauty brands have begun to include minimalist products in their ranges, with Merit Beauty leading the way.

Since its launch in January 2021, Merit Beauty has gained cult status thanks to its collection of easy-to-use and easy-to-make products that make the skin shine. Although it is difficult to choose our favourite from their offers, our editors especially love the complexion Perfecter Stick, which provides just the right amount of opacity without feeling too thick, and the Volumizing Brow Pomade (also known as the most effective way to achieve the fluffy look of the eyebrows). That’s why it’s no surprise that we rushed to get our hands on the brand’s recent launch: the Great Skin Serum. Keep reading to learn more about the highly anticipated introduction of Merit Beauty skincare.

First, A Little On My Skin

I started my tretinoin journey a little over a month ago, which made my skin very dry and flaky. I constantly apply a thick, no-frills moisturizer (I chose Crave) to minimize peeling and irritation. In addition, I have found that the skin barrier of my skin is very sensitive to touch, so I need to be gentle when washing my face or applying makeup. The good news is that I think I’ve almost been through the worst when it comes to drought. The less good news: I don’t know how my skin will react to a new product. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

About Merit’s Great Skin Serum

While Great Skin is Merit Beauty’s first foray into skincare, Aila Morin, senior vice president of growth, brand and innovation, says that the serum was one of the brand’s first products. “It took us almost five years to get it right,” she says, ” we optimized the formula 52 times. “After years of trial and error, Merit has finally done it with a lightweight formulation that gives you instantly glowing, hydrated skin that lasts all day.

In the 50 ml bottle you will find an innovative formula that combines niacinamide and hyaluronic acid (also known as two of the most popular skin care ingredients). According to New York-based dermatologist Dr. Rachel Nazarian, combining these two ingredients in one product means you get twice as much moisture without complicating your skincare routine. “The combination is fantastic,” she says, ” niacinamide has been shown to strengthen the top layer of the skin and improve its ability to retain moisture, while hyaluronic acid draws moisture into the skin for an instant moisturizing effect.

“In essence, the combination is a win-win situation for nourishing, smoothing and whitening the skin. In addition to hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, the formulation also contains caffeine-rich cocoa seed extract and Japanese gold wire root, which, according to Dr. Nazarian have anti-inflammatory and protective properties.

Overall, this product is suitable for everyone and every skin type-and Dr. Nazarian has confirmed that its ingredients do not cause irritation or allergic reactions. “I think most people could tolerate it well,” she shares, ” and everyone can benefit from the moisturizing properties.”

My results

To my surprise, after applying Great Skin, I can really see a difference in how my skin looks under my makeup. It gives the same soft, subtle shine as a highlighter in all the right places—mainly on my cheekbones, eyebrows and the bridge of my nose— and does not pill after applying a tinted moisturizer and concealer.

I have been using this product for three weeks and I love the instant shine I see with my makeup. I also notice a difference in the texture and dryness of my skin after application. It feels nourished throughout the day, which is especially helpful as temperatures drop in New York City. In addition, the extra moisture makes it easier to apply my makeup to dry skin, as the moisture keeps my light makeup in place to prevent flaking.

Final verdict: it’s worth it

The Large skin serum feels like a real fit for the Merit Beauty line. Just like the brand’s makeup, the serum highlights your natural skin and makes you look like yourself and still feel like yourself. Although I did not notice a big difference in my skin tone, I felt that my makeup did not look so good without beautiful skin. I was finally able to recreate the clean girl’s aesthetic and the serum gave me a little more shine when my skin was dull. I would recommend it to anyone who thinks their skin could use a big glass of water.
